Upgrading to a shiny new smartphone is exciting. Whether you are selling your old phone on an online marketplace, trading it in for a store discount, or giving it to a younger sibling, you need to prepare the old device first.
Many people simply open Settings, tap โFactory Resetโ, and hand the phone to a buyer.
Here is the danger: If you donโt sign out of your cloud accounts properly first, your phone may activate an Anti-Theft Activation Lock (FRP on Android, iCloud Activation Lock on iPhone). The buyer wonโt be able to set up the phone and will demand a refund! Even worse, if you forget your physical microSD card, strangers could recover deleted photos using basic file recovery software.
Follow this step-by-step checklist to safely wipe your phone and protect your private data before handing it over.
1. Step 1: Backup Everything You Care About
Once you wipe your phone, there is no undo button. Make sure your important memories and files are safely copied:
- WhatsApp & Telegram Chats: Open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > tap Back Up Now to your Google Drive or iCloud.
- Photos & Videos: Check that your Google Photos, iCloud, or OneDrive shows โBackup completeโ. Alternatively, plug your phone into a computer with a USB cable and drag your
DCIMfolder to your laptop. - Contacts & Calendar: Verify your contacts are synchronized with your Google or Apple Account, not stored on the phoneโs internal memory alone.
- Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Codes: If you use Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or 2FAS, use the โExport / Transfer Accountsโ feature to move your codes to your new phone before wiping the old one!
2. Step 2: Unpair Smartwatches and Bluetooth Accessories
Before resetting:
- Go to your smartwatch app (Apple Watch, Galaxy Wearable, Garmin) and tap Unpair Device.
- Unpairing automatically creates a final backup of your watch data and frees the smartwatch to pair with your new phone without errors.
3. Step 3: Remove Your Google Account or Apple ID (Crucial!)
This is the most critical step that prevents Factory Reset Protection (FRP) lockouts:
On Android:
- Open Settings > Accounts / Passwords & Accounts.
- Tap your primary Google Account.
- Tap Remove Account.
- Repeat for any secondary Google or Samsung accounts. (Doing this tells Google servers: โI am intentionally releasing ownership of this phone.โ)
On iPhone:
- Open Settings and tap your Apple ID name at the top.
- Scroll to the very bottom and tap Sign Out.
- Enter your Apple ID password to turn off Find My iPhone.
- Confirm by tapping Sign Out.
4. Step 4: Physically Eject SIM and MicroSD Cards
It sounds obvious, but thousands of people accidentally leave their memory cards inside traded-in phones!
- Use a SIM ejector tool or a small paperclip to open the tray.
- Remove your nano-SIM card.
- Remove any microSD card. Many Android users store personal photo galleries, tax documents, and PDF downloads on external SD cards. Keep that card or destroy it safely.
- If you use an eSIM, go to your cellular settings and tap Delete / Remove eSIM profile.
5. Step 5: Perform the Secure Factory Data Reset
Now that your accounts are disconnected and your data is backed up, you can perform the wipe:
On Android:
- Go to Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset) (or search for Factory Reset).
- Tap Erase all data.
- Enter your phone PIN to confirm.
- Modern Android automatically encrypts flash memory by default. When the phone resets, it destroys the master encryption keys, rendering all past files permanently unrecoverable.
On iPhone:
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Tap Continue and enter your device passcode.
6. Step 6: Revoke Device Access from Your Google / Apple Account
Once the phone is in the buyerโs hands, do one final security sweep from your computer or new phone:
- For Google: Visit
myaccount.google.com/device-activity. Find your old phone model in the list and click Sign Out. - For Apple: Visit
appleid.apple.com. Check your device list and click Remove from Account on the old iPhone. - For Banking & UPI Apps: Log into your net banking portal from your browser and review your registered devices list to remove the old handset.
7. Clean the Physical Phone for Higher Resale Value
Take 3 minutes to physically wipe the screen and camera lenses with a microfiber cloth, remove old sticky case residue, and put the phone in its original retail box if you still have it. A clean phone with no account locks easily commands a 10% to 15% higher selling price!
