This comprehensive guide outlines vetted mobile software for security, privacy, and everyday performance. Review the recommendations below to optimize your daily device workflows.

Modern parenting comes with a whole new challenge that our parents never had to deal with: managing screens.

Children today have access to the entire internet in the palm of their hand. From educational videos and homework apps to addictive mobile games, late-night texting, and accidental credit card charges on game currency—it is easy for screen time to spiral out of control.

Fortunately, you don’t need expensive spy software or complex technical skills to create a safe digital environment for your children.

In this guide, we walk through Google Family Link (for Android), Apple Screen Time (for iPhone and iPad), and built-in app timers so you can set healthy digital boundaries without arguments.

Google Family Link is a 100% free parental control service created by Google. It connects your child’s Android phone or tablet to your own phone, allowing you to manage their device remotely from your pocket.

  • Daily Screen Time Limits: Set a maximum allowance (e.g., 2 hours on weekdays, 3 hours on weekends). When the limit expires, the phone automatically locks for the day.
  • Bedtime Schedules: Set a downtime schedule (e.g., 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM). During bedtime, social media and games are blocked, but essential phone calls to parents still work.
  • App Approval Requests: Whenever your child tries to download a new app from the Google Play Store, a notification pops up on your phone asking you to Approve or Deny it.
  • Preventing In-App Purchases: Children cannot buy game skins, coins, or gems without your explicit biometric or password approval.
  • Real-Time GPS Location: See where your child is on Google Maps and receive alerts when they arrive at school or home.

Setting up Family Link takes about 10 minutes. You will need both your phone and your child’s phone:

  1. Install the App on Your Phone: Download Google Family Link from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store onto your smartphone.
  2. Create or Connect Your Child’s Google Account: Open the app and tap “Add Child”. If your child already has a Gmail account, link it. If not, follow the prompts to create a supervised account for them.
  3. Set Up the Child’s Phone: On your child’s phone, open Settings > Google > Parental Controls and select Child or teen. Follow the on-screen prompts to pair with your parent account.
  4. Configure Rules: From your phone, tap your child’s profile and set your desired daily limits, bedtime lockouts, and content filters for YouTube and Google Chrome.

3. How to Set Up Screen Time & Parental Controls on iPhone / iPad

If your family uses Apple devices, the parental control system is built directly into iOS through Screen Time.

Step 1: Set Up Family Sharing

  1. On your iPhone, open Settings and tap your Apple ID profile at the top.
  2. Tap Family Sharing > Set Up Your Family.
  3. Tap Create Child Account or invite your child’s existing Apple ID.

Step 2: Configure Screen Time Rules

  1. Go to Settings > Screen Time.
  2. Tap your child’s name under Family.
  3. Turn on Downtime: Schedule nighttime hours when only phone calls and pre-selected educational apps are permitted.
  4. Turn on App Limits: Set daily time limits for categories (e.g., 45 minutes for Social Media, 1 hour for Games).
  5. Turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions:
    • Go to Store Purchases & Downloads and set In-app Purchases to Don’t Allow.
    • Set Web Content to Limit Adult Websites.
  6. Set a Screen Time Passcode (make sure it is different from your child’s phone unlock code!).

4. How to Use Simple App Timers (Without Full Parental Controls)

If your child is a teenager, or if you simply want to manage your own habits, you don’t need a full parental supervision app. Both Android and iPhone include built-in App Timers:

On Android (Digital Wellbeing):

  1. Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
  2. Tap Dashboard.
  3. Scroll to the app consuming too much time (e.g., YouTube, Instagram, or a favorite game).
  4. Tap the Hourglass icon next to the app and set a daily timer (e.g., 30 minutes).
  5. When the 30 minutes are up, the app icon turns grey and pauses until midnight!

On iPhone (App Limits):

  1. Open Settings > Screen Time > App Limits.
  2. Tap Add Limit.
  3. Select specific apps or full categories and set your desired daily duration.

5. Healthy Digital Rules Every Family Should Adopt

Parental control software is helpful, but open communication is even more powerful. Here are 3 rules that protect children:

  1. No Devices in the Bedroom Overnight: Have a shared family charging station in the kitchen or living room where all phones, tablets, and laptops sleep at night. This eliminates late-night insomnia and secret scrolling.
  2. Talk About Online Strangers & Cyberbullying: Remind children that people online are not always who they claim to be. Instruct them to tell you immediately if anyone in an online game asks for personal photos, addresses, or phone numbers.
  3. Lead by Example: If parents are glued to their phones during dinner or family conversations, children will naturally copy that behavior. Establish “screen-free dinner times” for everyone.
