You list your old sofa, bicycle, or smartphone for sale on an online marketplace like OLX, Quikr, or Facebook Marketplace.
Within minutes of publishing your ad, a buyer messages you. They don’t negotiate on price. They don’t even ask to inspect the item in person. They claim to be an Indian Army officer, a government official, or a busy professional who wants to pay immediately via UPI and send a mover or delivery truck later.
Then, they send you a QR code on WhatsApp with the instruction:
“Sir, I have generated an instant online payment voucher. Just scan this QR code in your Google Pay / PhonePe app, enter your PIN, and the money will be credited to your bank account.”
If you scan that code and enter your PIN, your bank balance will not increase by $100. $100 will instantly be stolen from your account.
This is the infamous Marketplace QR Code Scam. Here is how to recognize the scammer’s tricks and safely sell items online without losing a single cent.
1. The Fundamental Truth: QR Codes Only SEND Money
To never fall for this scam again, memorize this universal technical fact:
You NEVER need to scan a QR code or enter your UPI / Banking PIN to RECEIVE money.
Think of a QR code like an envelope with an address on it:
- When you scan a merchant’s QR code at a grocery store, you are opening your wallet to pay them.
- To receive money from someone, all they need is your phone number, UPI ID, or bank account number. They don’t need you to scan anything, and they never need you to type your secret PIN.
If anyone asks you to scan a code or type your PIN to “accept a refund” or “receive a deposit”, they are 100% trying to rob you.
2. The Anatomy of the Fake Army / Police Officer Scam
Why do marketplace scammers love impersonating military officers and police personnel?
Because people naturally respect and trust uniform personnel. Scammers exploit this trust by:
- Using Stolen Identity Cards: They send fake or stolen ID cards showing an officer in uniform, complete with military stamps and service numbers.
- Claiming Transfer Urgency: They claim they are stationed in an active border cantonment or being transferred tomorrow, so they cannot meet you in person.
- Offering an Immediate Advance Payment: They eagerly offer to pay an advance token amount or full price to make you feel eager and lower your guard.
3. The “Test Payment of $1 / Rs. 5” Trick
Scammers know that modern users are skeptical. To build trust, they use a clever psychological trick:
- The scammer says: “Let me send a test payment of Rs. 10 first to make sure your account is working.”
- They actually transfer Rs. 10 to your UPI directly. Your phone pings with a real notification. You think: “Great, he is genuine!”
- Then, the scammer sends a QR code for the remaining balance: “Now scan this QR code to collect the rest.”
- You scan it, enter your PIN thinking it’s safe, and the money disappears!
What actually happened? The first Rs. 10 was a small bait transfer they sent themselves. The second QR code was a Collect Request configured to debit your account.
4. 5 Safety Rules for Selling Safely on OLX, Quikr & Marketplace
Follow these 5 rules whenever you sell anything online:
1. In-Person Cash or Direct UPI Only
Insist on meeting the buyer face-to-face in a well-lit public place (e.g., a coffee shop, shopping mall, or outside a police station). Hand over the item only after the buyer inspects it and transfers payment directly.
2. Never Ship Items Before Receiving Funds in Your Bank
Never believe a screenshot of a “Payment Processing” receipt or an email claiming “Funds will be released after you courier the item.” Always open your own banking app independently to verify that the balance has actually cleared.
3. Keep Conversations Inside the Marketplace App
Scammers immediately try to move you off the platform: “Please chat on WhatsApp at this number.” Keep all negotiations inside the official marketplace app chat. Marketplace fraud filters can detect suspicious links and flag scammers before they trick you.
4. Beware of Over-Eager Buyers
Real buyers negotiate, ask for extra photos, and want to know the condition of the product. If a buyer agrees to your asking price within 2 minutes without asking a single question, be on high alert.
5. Generate Legitimate Invoices & Bills for Expensive Items
If you are selling electronics or valuable equipment, provide a clean bill of sale. You can use our free Invoice & Quotation Maker to draft a simple receipt detailing the serial number and terms of sale for both parties’ protection.
5. What to Do If You Fell for the Scam
If you accidentally scanned a fraudulent QR code and money was deducted:
- Call Your Bank / Payment Provider Immediately: Report the transaction as unauthorized fraud within 2 hours.
- Note the Transaction Reference ID (UTR Number): This is required by banks to trace the destination account.
- File an Official Cyber Complaint: Report the transaction and the scammer’s phone number on your national cybercrime portal immediately.
Spread this knowledge to friends and family. The more people understand that scanning a QR code only debits money, the faster these scam networks collapse.
